HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) — Neighbors in Hurricane woke up Friday morning to little to no water pressure after a reported water main break. The break caused delays for some who were trying to get an early start to the holiday weekend cooking but were prevented from doing so.
Joanne Frey is the owner of The Sweet Retreat in Hurricane, and water is a big necessity for day-to-day operations and filling dozens of cupcake orders for Christmas weekend.
“That’s when the panic did kind of set in,” Frey said. “Because I thought, ‘Oh wow I’ve got orders that are going to be here at 11 a.m. and they need to be filled.’ ”
A break was discovered in the city’s main water line about 8 a.m.
A city crew responded immediately and the leak was isolated, according to Mayor Scott Edwards.
The water line had to be drained and the main tank was drained, as well.
Frey says she called the health department, and they walked her through the proper protocol to make sure the bakery was clean and the sweets were safe to eat.
After Friday’s brief scare, Frey says she will always make sure there is backup water at her store should another outage hit.
“I did make a pact with myself and say I’m going to keep extra gallons of water here on hand just because if something like this does happen, even an hour of being down is hard.”
A boil water advisory has been issued for all Hurricane Water customers until further notice.

Eastpointe to lift boil water advisory Monday
by Mitch Hotts, originally posted on December 24, 2016
Eastpointe officials say a boil water advisory will remain in place until Monday morning after a traffic accident on Christmas Eve temporarily disrupted water service.
Residents and business owners were without water service for several hours Saturday after a motorist crashed into a surface electrical service box on Gratiot Avenue, north of Eight Mile Road.
The collision disabled electricity to a pressure relief valve at the city’s transfer station that controls the water supply, according to City Manager Steve Duchane.
Duchane said the valve manages the water supply pressure on the main water service from the Great Lakes Water Authority. When it goes out, water pressure decreases across the system.
Duchane said public works crews brought in generators to slowly bring the water pressure back online in increments.
“The system was never contaminated, but our engineers are suggesting people continue to boil the water as a precaution,” Duchane said.
DTE Energy has since reconnected the standard power supply.
City officials are testing water samples under the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and system operations regulations, according to the city manager.
Public Works Supervisor Carol Apley and her staff are overseeing the tests. They expect to lift the advisory Monday morning, pending the results of the final tests.
Duchane said Eastpointe owns a 400,000-gallon underground water reserve system at the public works yard on 10 Mile Road that has been dormant for years. He plans to ask the City Council to re-activate the system in 2017.
In an unrelated incident, a motorist crashed through the fence to the city’s dog park on 10 Mile Road on Friday. Public works crews implemented temporary repairs to the fence after the vehicle was removed.
In both case, after a police investigation and charges are potentially authorized, the city may seek to re-capture some of its costs for the dog park fence and water system repairs through court-ordered restitution, Duchane said.

Boil water advisory issued for parts of Bouctouche
The boil water advisory stems from an overnight water main break
originally posted on January 16, 2017
A boil water advisory has been ordered by the Department of Health in parts of Bouctouche Monday morning.
Dennis Richard, a town spokesperson, said there was a water main break overnight and some residents may experience low water pressure.
The water system is located on the south side of the Bouctouche River.
Areas affected include Acadie Road, the Chebooktoosk Cottages, the Pays de la Sagouine, Champlain Avenue, George Road, Tiffany Avenue, Claude Avenue, Boucher Avenue, Bernard Road, Louis Bourg Road, Klomfass Avenue, Kanalflakt Way, Heron Court and Irene Avenue.
During the advisory period, it is important that all water destined for drinking, preparing infant formulas and juices, making ice cubes, washing fruits and vegetables, cooking and dental hygiene, boil for one minute.
Unless advised differently by the Department of Health, under most circumstances it is not necessary to boil water used for other household purposes.
Adults, adolescents and older children may shower, bathe or wash using tap water, but should avoid swallowing the water. Toddlers and infants should receive sponge baths only.
Dishes and laundry may be washed in tap water, either by hand or by machine, unless advised differently by the Department of Health.
Boil advisory issued for some residents in St. Mary Parish
originally posted on January 16, 2017
ST. MARY PARISH – The St. Mary Parish Waterworks Dist. #5 Water System is issuing a boil advisory for its customers, effective immediately.
According to a spokesperson, the Water Treatment Plant lost electricity; therefore, pressure pumps were not running for a short duration, causing the system pressure to drop below the LA Department of Health requirements.
As a precaution, the St. Mary Parish water system is advising customers to boil their water for one full minute before consumption. This includes making ice, brushing teeth, consuming fountain beverages and using water for food preparation.
Here are some helpful tips:
Boil water for one full minute in a clean container. Time the one minute after the water has been brought to a full, rolling boil. The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a clean bottle, pouring it from a clean container to another, or by adding a small pinch of salt to each quart of water that is boiled.
This boil advisory is to remain in effect until rescinded by the Water System.
Boil Water Advisory issued for Burden in Cowley County
originally posted on January 15, 2017
BURDEN, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Burden public water supply in Cowley County. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.
The advisory took effect on January 15 and will remain in effect until conditions which place the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be adequately resolved.
Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:
- Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation, or use bottled water.
- Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
- Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
- Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
- If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.
