by Kitsap Sun, originally posted on January 25, 2017

SOUTH KITSAP — About 1,000 customers in the South Kitsap area are being asked to boil their tap water after E. coli bacteria was found in a storage tank.

Customers in the Horizons West system should boil water or use bottled water to drink, cook food, make ice, brush teeth and wash dishes by hand. The warning, provided by the Washington Water Service Co., which manages the system, is until further notice. Customers should bring water to a rolling boil for a full minute, the company said in a news release.

A company storage tank tested positive for E. coli. It will be removed from service and cleaned. Chlorine is being added to three other tanks as a precaution.

Customers inside the plat of Horizons West, which is owned by Quistorff Water System, aren’t subject to the advisory.

Tap water still is safe for showering, bathing and other household tasks. Residents are advised to use commercial dishwashing detergent in dishwashers.

 Customers can submit receipts for any water purchased during the advisory to the Washington Water Customer Service Center, 14519 Peacock Hill Avenue, Gig Harbor. They’ll be reimbursed.

Anyone with questions about the advisory can call 877-408-4060.

Boil water issued for Plum Orchard/Scarbro area

originally posted on January 25, 2017

West Virginia American Water has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for approximately 50 customers in the Plum Orchard/Scarbro area of the company’s New River system. The affected area includes Paint Creek Road and Paint Creek Cutoff. The advisory follows a water main break, which crews have repaired. Customers will be notified of the advisory by the CodeRED emergency customer notification system.

Affected customers should boil their water before consumption until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that may be present in the water. Customers are asked to bring water used for drinking, cooking, bathing and brushing teeth to a full boil for a minimum of one minute, then cool before use.

West Virginia American Water also recommends the following steps:

 • Throw away beverages and ice cubes if made with tap water;

• Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;

• Provide pets with boiled water after cooling;

 • Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;

• Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.

Once the system recovers, West Virginia American Water will collect additional water quality samples in the area of the outage. For more information, contact WVAW’s customer service center at 1-800-685-8660.

Milledgeville water main break causes boil water advisory

by Kasandra Ortiz, originally posted on January 25, 2017

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA.– – Some people in Milledgeville spent Wednesday without water yet again after a water main break. Meanwhile, crews worked hard to get the break on Columbia Street fixed as soon as possible.

But the water issue caused neighbors from McIntosh Street to Greene Street under a boil water advisory. Some students who live down the street say they had no idea there was even a problem with their water.

“Yeah, I didn’t know until I came home and tried to make lunch and it wasn’t running at all and that was like super inconvenient. I found out hours later what was going on,” says Sami Montigny.

She says she thinks something should be done about the reoccurring water problem. Montigny says this is not the first time she has experienced this.

“I drove all the way home one time just to go to the bathroom because all the toilets in the dorms were unusable. I hope they replace the pipes, that may be a good first step, or at least pay more attention to it,” says Montigny.

Another student on Columbia Street, Jolee Battles, says the water issues are very inconvenient.

“We always have to go buy water because even if we don’t have it, a lot of times, if we do have it, it’s brown if they’re working on the pipes, but also the road was blocked off for a long time today, so we couldn’t drive through or anything like that,” explains Battles.

In just the last year, Milledgeville has experienced at least five water outages. Neighbors say it happens when you least expect it.

“We just kind of figured out when we turned on our sink that there’s no water, so OK, something must be wrong. So it’s just like no warning. You never know when it’s going to happen,” says Battles.

It is an overflowing problem they hope will soon clear up with a permanent solution. WMAZ also reached out to Mayor Gary Thrower for comment, but he was out of town Wednesday. City officials suggest residents boil their water for at least a minute until further notice.
