UPDATE: Boil water advisory lifted

by Lansing MI, originally posted on January 05, 2017

City of Mason, MI – The City of Mason, in consultation with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), has lifted the Boil Water Advisory originally issued on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

On the morning of Tuesday, January 3, 2017, the Boil Water Advisory was issued due to a water break which resulted in the loss of system pressure which had the potential of causing harmful bacteria to enter the water supply distribution systems. Out of an abundance of caution and for the sake of public health, the advisory was issued.

Mason businesses affected by the advisory included properties located in the following areas:
West Side of Cedar Street from Curtis Street to Kerns Road and Kerns Road from Cedar Street to Howell Road.

The test results for the first and second round of samples collected from the affected areas have come back negative for harmful bacteria. It is not necessary for businesses to do anything, such as flushing, prior to resuming full use of their tap water.

“We appreciate the patience of the businesses that were affected and we apologize for the major inconvenience experienced since Tuesday morning,” stated Deb Stuart, Mason City Administrator.

Community members are asked to help share this information with all other people who drink Mason water, especially those who may not receive this information directly.

Boil advisory issued for some in Lake Waccamaw

By WECT Staff, originally posted on November 10, 2016

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) – Lake Waccamaw officials said a leaking water main has prompted a boil water advisory for some residents.

According to officials, the leaking main is in the area of 506 Lake Shore Drive and is causing periods of low pressure or outages in the water distribution system.

Periods of low or no pressure in the system increase the potential for back siphonage and the introduction of bacteria into the water system.

Residents are encouraged to boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water.

Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.

The boil advisory affects residents beginning at 506 Lake Shore Drive, including all of McRae Woods and continues to 904 Lake Shore Drive. These are the only affected areas.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

Nitrate pollution plagues Valley water

Originally posted on November 8, 2016

Thank you for your story about the public health crisis our Valley is facing due to nitrate-contaminated drinking water. The health and well being of farmers and farm workers living in our agricultural communities are at risk due to nitrate contamination in groundwater, which causes blue baby syndrome, miscarriages and cancer.

Safe drinking water is a concern for the entire state and nitrate pollution causes acute health threats for farmers and farm workers. Without action today, all residents of the San Joaquin Valley will continue to deal with this crisis for decades to come.

It is estimated that 80 percent of our Valley will be impacted by nitrate pollution in 2050 without some immediate change to how nutrients are managed on farms and dairies. Our groundwater resources are precious and further nitrate pollution impacts the Central Valley’s position as a global leader in agricultural output.

All residents of the San Joaquin Valley deserve healthy and thriving farms and communities, so we will continue working with farmers and our elected officials to advance legislative solutions that benefit the whole agricultural ecosystem – including farmers and farmworking communities.
