Water system work could mean water loss, boil water advisory

Some Saginaw County residents may have to boil their water before cooking their Thanksgiving meal.
Richland Township officials are working on the water main system, and that could cause water in certain sections of the township to be without water for part of Nov. 21 and Nov. 22.
Officials said that once the water is turned back on, the area will be under a “Notice to Boil Water” until it can be cleared and tested.
Officials said because of the water main lowering, there could be a loss of water pressure.
Whenever a water system loses pressure for a significant amount of times, precautions must be taken.
The impacted area includes: Wilson Street – Cherry to N. Pine and N. Maple from Thomas North to the Dead end including Ault Street and the middle school.
The township says this impacts about 30 residents.

Austin, Texas, issues citywide boil-water notice after historic flooding

Officials in Austin, Texas, have issued a citywide boil-water ordinance and urged residents to cut consumption as the city has been struggling to treat water dirtied by historic flooding.
On Monday, the city said in a statement that “due to the high level of silt and debris in our water supply lakes as a result of recent flooding, there is an urgent need to reduce water demand to allow treatment plant operations to stabilize."
On Wednesday, the city entered a third day of the boil-water notice after floodwaters flowed into the region’s water supply, elevating levels of debris, silt and mud, according to the city.
"Based on the current information we do not anticipate our water issues to last beyond a handful of days," he said, adding that will depend on weather and consumption demands.
Hurricane Willa was expected to bring 1 to 2 inches of rain to the region Wednesday, with isolated pockets of up to 3 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
“Already saturated soils and swollen creeks and rivers will lead to renewed flash flooding and river flooding concerns,” the weather service said.
Paula Orozco, a city resident, said the ordinance was leaving people “pretty miserable.” “Everybody’s scared to drink any kind of water around.
“It seems like everyone’s dehydrated because they’d rather just not drink the water at all,” she said.
Orozco said she initially was purchasing water as a result of the ordinance but then began boiling water at home when those bottles went fast.
In 2015, residents of Corpus Christi, Texas, went through four water advisories over 17 months because of a variety of contaminations, beginning that July when E. coli was found in water samples.

Cairo eateries not happy about the wait on safe water

CAIRO — Lost revenue, unclear communication and an unexpectedly long wait have contributed to resentment toward public works officials in the wake of a two-day forced closure of Cairo restaurants.
Adding to the frustration was what many restaurant owners and managers described as a lack of clear communication from city officials.
"I was getting up at 5 o’clock every morning to see if we would get to work," Pope said.
"We came in each day even though we didn’t get our hours," Mills said.
"They just said we could open back up when the boil water advisory is lifted.
Numerous restaurant managers and owners said they were confused about the city’s timeline for sending in the water samples to be tested.
Rutherford said she believed the city took too long to send in the water samples.
"There were hundreds of people out of work yesterday because they couldn’t test the water when it should have been tested," Rutherford said.
Rocuant added that he felt the water test should not have taken a day to produce results.
"They wasted hours," Pope said.

Austin, Texas, Issues Citywide Boil Water Notice

In Texas, the city of Austin’s water utility has issued a citywide boil water notice as it struggles with the impact of debris from flooding on its water treatment capabilities.
"The high level of debris, silt and mud requires extended filtration that slows the process of getting treated water into the system," Austin Water said in a press release.
The city is telling residents to reduce water use overall and to boil any tap water intended for consumption for at least 3 minutes in order to kill any bacteria that may be in it.
"This isn’t a conclusion we came to lightly," says Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk.
"Unfortunately, this is simply a case of Mother Nature throwing more at the system than the system can currently process."
All three of Austin Water’s drinking-water plants are currently running at 1/3 to 1/4 of the capacity they would normally run.
"It’s been a real struggle," Meszaros says.
Austin Water will lift the boil water notice once they are able to stabilize the treatment systems.
We’ll just have to take this day by day and hour by hour to see [how] our plants perform," Meszaros says.
Austin Independent School District is encouraging students to bring water bottles with them.
