Boil-water advisory in parts of south Atlanta lifted

UPDATE 10/17: The boil water advisory has been lifted.
PREVIOUS: ATLANTA — Officials with the Atlanta Watershed Management agency have issued a boil-water advisory for a small portion of south Atlanta in the wake of a Saturday water-main break.
Crews are working to repair the 20-inch water main in the 2800 block of Springdale Road, which forced a shut down of lanes to drivers. As a result, officials are issuing the boil-water advisory for the area, including the Crestview Health and Rehabilitation Center and the Fox Glove Nursing Home.
Atlanta Watershed said the break is affecting service to about 780 residents on Springdale between Cleveland Avenue and Cofield Drive SW. Impacted customers were notified, and water has been delivered. However, officials said if anyone experiences a loss of water at their address outside of the area, they should also follow the boil-water advisory.
During a boil-water advisory, customers should boil water for one minute past a roiling boil before using it for cooking, drinking or brushing teeth. Infant, elderly and those with immune deficiencies should be particularly careful.
The department said it will flush the system as a precaution and sample the affected zones to ensure there are no contaminations in the system. There’s no word on when the boil-water advisory will be lifted.
Lumberton restores some water service; residents should conserve, boil water
By Red Springs Citizen, originally posted on October 16, 2016
LUMBERTON — Water service has been restored to some parts of Lumberton as crews make repairs to the city’s water plant, which was flooded following Hurricane Matthew and shut down.
Water started flowing from some Lumberton faucets on Friday, as the city tried connecting its water to system to the county’s, which has some leaks but is functioning and providing safe drinking water to most county residents.
On Saturday, massive pumps were able to drain enough water near the city’s Lowery Road water plant to give crews access to the facility.
“The city has made partial repairs to the water plant and will slowly pressurize the system,” said a CodeRED alert sent Sunday. “A boil water advisory is in effect. Please boil the water before consuming or use bottled water. You may continue to experience pressure variances over the next several days while the system is being fully restored. Additionally, a conservation notice is in effect and water shall be used for essential purposes only.”
Meals and water given to Wayne County residents still under boil water advisory

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A boil advisory remains in effect in parts of Wayne County.
Emergency management is providing safe drinking water — and a middle schooler is trying to keep storm victims from going hungry.
There were hundreds of bags of ice and tens of thousands of bottles of water this weekend.
The items were at a free drive-thru for Wayne County folks unable to drink the water from their faucets.
“We’re having to boil it and we’re having a hard time. We appreciate anything you’ll give us,” one resident said.
“We have to boil it to use it right now and I’d rather have bottled water anyway,” said Tom Comer, who came to the drive-thru.
Wayne County Emergency Management, the N.C. National Guard, and volunteers, mostly from the Mount Olive ward of The Church Of Latter Day Saints, loaded three cases of water and a bag or two of ice into each car.
On Saturday they gave out more than 50,000 bottles of water and more than 1,700 bags of ice. They had more of that Sunday, and planned to give it all away.
Coke, Pepsi, Target and Walmart all provided pallets of water. And a local food pantry brought more than 100 lunches as well.
“Someone called us saying they need water and food, so we just came over here and brought some stuff,” said Mackenzie Hinson.
Mackenzie Hinson, just 12 years old, normally distributes food three Thursdays a month.
“Since the hurricane hit I’ve been serving hot meals for the past week at 5 o’clock and we had lunch today at 12 o’clock,” she said.
Mackenzie says it’s rewarding to help others, and hopes more people will participate in feeding programs, especially during recovery from Matthew.
“Anything really helps at a food pantry, because at this period of time everything runs low, so anything really helps,” she said.
Volunteers noticed several people making multiple trips through the drive thru.
They even asked police, who were already on scene, to step in.
