Boil water advisory issued for Buena Vista

by Craig Baird, originally posted on September 14, 2016

Due to a water main break that caused the depressurization of the village’s water tower, Buena Vista has issued a boil water advisory for all residents. The advisory should remain in place for another two to three days until the Water Security Agency gives the all clear.

The break occurred in the main line outside a private residence around 3 a.m., but the village was not alerted to the break for several hours. The village currently has a system in place where a phone call is automatically issued from the water tower if the pressure begins to drop, but the system did not initiate the alert.

“What we monitor is the water pressure of the tower. If that goes down, then there is an automated telephone call that goes to one of our people to tell them something is wrong,” Mayor Bill Dinu said. “That part didn’t work. Our tower ended up draining over the night but we got working on it around 5 a.m.”

The village then had to refill the tower and the boil water advisory was issued at 10 a.m.

“In this situation, the Water Security Agency will do a preliminary water boil advisory until they can test the water,” Dinu said, adding that the test has already been completed. “It will be in place for a couple of days. As soon as they are satisfied it is fit for human consumption, they will get back to us.”

Until the advisory is lifted, residents are advised to boil the water used for drinking purposes for at least one minute at a rolling boil. Water should not be used for dishes if it is not boiled. Adults and adolescents can still shower, bathe or wash with tap water but should avoid swallowing the water. Residents can also do laundry.

Boil Water Advisory lifted for most Maui residents

originally posted on September 14, 2016

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) has cancelled the boil water advisory for Paia, Spreckelsville, Puunene, Kihei, Wailea, Makena, Maalaea, Kahului and most Wailuku water customers.

Customers in Iao Valley and along a portion of Main Street have been individually notified to continue boiling water for consumption.

DWS asks customers in Lahaina, Wailuku and Kahului to continue to conserve water and to avoid any unnecessary water use until further notice while water treatment operations and tanks are brought back up to normal operating capacity.

The cancellation of the boil water advisory was issued for areas where water samples have been confirmed to meet Federal Environmental Protection Agency and State Department of Health water quality standards.

Water samples were taken from the Iao Valley Road area Thursday morning; the next update for Iao Valley Road and Main Street residents will be on Friday at approximately 2:30 p.m. when results are available. These residents were individually notified to continue to limit their water use to general washing and toilet flushing only and to not use their water for drinking and for the preparation of food. These residents and businesses are advised to use water from several potable water tankers that the County has placed for drinking and cooking.

The boil water advisory was a result of damage to the water source in Iao Valley and the possibility of bacterial contamination in Iao Tank.  As a precautionary measure and in accordance with the Department of Health, the Department of Water Supply issued a Boil Water Advisory until testing results were able to verify the water quality as acceptable.

The following measures are strongly encouraged for all who were impacted by the boil water advisory:

  • Run and flush your water faucets and fixtures for 5-10 minutes
  • Flush any machines and appliances connected to your water supply, such as soda dispensers and ice makers.
  • Discard any ice cubes that were made while the boil water advisory was in place
  • If needed, change any water filters that seem to have become clogged.

If the water does not run clear after flushing, contact the DWS trouble line at 270-7633. Customers should call the 24-hour hotline at 270-7633 if a water-related problem occurs or with any questions.

12 years later: Rural Cleveland County residents get access to clean water

by Keaton Fox, originally posted on September 15, 2016

In Lexington, some living here would turn the faucet and nothing would come out.

When something did emerge, it likely was discolored and undrinkable.

“Washing your dishes to washing your hands. You just hope that every time you turn that faucet on that it’s still going to come on and sometimes it doesn’t,” Ryan Madden told Fox 25 in May 2015.

“No laundry, ever. We just, no dishwasher, I have hauled water over to boil and do dishes before because I was afraid to use the water. It’s just hard,” Tammy Henson said.

It’s been a fight, but a new plan to sell fresh, clean drinking water to these rural Oklahomans is now very close to becoming a reality.

State Rep. Bobby Cleveland wrote and got legislation passed in the last legislative session that would allow the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife to sell water to the water district in the area. A plan to get water from the nearby prison didn’t work out, Cleveland said.

“It is really an amazing story here,” Cleveland said. “We’re less than an hour from the state Capitol,” and didn’t have fresh water, Cleveland added.

“It’s finally done, complete, over,” Cleveland added.

Some Kingsville residents under boil water advisory

originally posted on September 13, 2016

The Town of Kingsville has imposed a “precautionary” boil water advisory for some residents due to an unplanned water works repair.

Water service for residents residing on Lansdowne Avenue will be disrupted between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Town officials say residents should plan to have little to no water available for the majority of this time. The contractor and the town will work diligently to restore water service as soon as possible.

As a result of this repair activity, the town is obligated to impose the boil water advisory until bacteriological testing confirms that the water is safe to drink.

Officials say this is only a precaution.

You will be advised by hand delivered flyer when the Precautionary Boil Water Advisory is no longer in effect, however we anticipate the advisory will remain in place until Thursday Sept 15th, at the earliest.

Should you have questions, and or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly. We appreciate your anticipated patience regarding this matter.
