Main break prompts boil water advisory in Montclair’s busy downtown

By Jessica Mazzola, originally posted on July 27, 2016

Montclair – A boil water advisory has been issued for the sections of downtown Montclair affected by a water main break Tuesday night.

Though flooding had ceased and a hole caused by the break repaired by Wednesday morning, township water officials issued the advisory for all residences and businesses in the Siena building, where the break occurred, and along Church and South Park Streets. Buildings in the area may be without water or have significantly less water pressure, the alert said.

Officials are urging residents in the area to, until further notice, either use bottled water or boil tap water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and other activities.

“A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists,” the alert reads.

“As a precaution, we are implementing a Boil Water Advisory until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory.”

The break and street collapse caused some of the area’s many businesses to close Tuesday evening, but business appeared to resume Wednesday morning.

Boil advisory lifted for Falcon Highlands Metro District

By Angelica Lombardi, originally posted on July 27, 2016

FALCON, Colo. – People living in the Falcon Highlands Metro District are no longer under a boil advisory order.

On Wednesday, test results came back negative for bacteria. As a precaution, the district had a ban advisory in place until testing could be completed.

People living in the district woke up Sunday to a water shortage that lasted several hours.

“We were clueless. We had no notification and we didn’t know what was going on,” said Lisa Graham.

The district put out a statement Tuesday night saying an electrical problem caused a pump to fail, which didn’t allow a well to fill up. Low water levels can lead to bacteria growth.

“Why did it take so long to get us notification that we need to be boiling water? We have six kids. They’ve been drinking a lot of water the past few days,” said Graham.

Graham said it took the district nearly three days to post an advisory on her door, three days too long for her and others.

“The day that it happened they should have been going door to door or at least try to communicate the day it happened rather than two days later,” said Dale.

The district is adding a third water line to help water supply, but in the meantime they’ll need to refill the one million gallon water tank before things are back to normal which could take weeks.

On top of the wait, many have a lot questions from a district that has nearly 350 homes and 30 businesses.

“They have a back up generator. So why didn’t the generator come on? That’s kind of confusing,” said Dale.

“What exactly does that mean for our family and how are we going to know if there’s something to watch out for? The communication at this point has been so poor,” said Graham.

Boil water advisory issued through Friday in Kimball Township

A boil water advisory will continue through Friday for Kimball Township residents impacted by Tuesday evening’s water main break.

Water was restored about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Th water main break Tuesday evening caused water to be shut off along Griswold Road from Wadhams Road to Edward Lane.

There was a gas line near the water main break, so crews waited until it was identified before beginning to dig, as to not break the gas line.

Griswold Road was partially closed but has since opened back up, said Robert Hand, Kimball Township clerk.

Hand added the township would notify residents when the boil alert is over.

Residents should place water into a clean, heat resistant container, heat it until it reaches a rapid, rolling boil, then continue boiling for at least 5 minutes, according to the St. Clair County Health Department. After boiling for 5 minutes, allow water to cool in a second clean container and store in a refrigerator.

Boil advisory issued parts of Fayette County

West Virginia American Water has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for U.S. 60 from Midland Trail High School to Lookout, Spyrock, Lookout, Winona and Edmond. The advisory follows a water main break, which drained area water storage tanks, causing low water pressure and water outages for some customers.

Crews have repaired the break, and water service is expected to be restored to all customers by 4 p.m. Customers will be notified of the advisory by the CodeRED emergency notification system.

Once service is restored, affected customers should boil their water before consumption until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that may be present in the water. Customers are asked to bring water used for drinking, cooking, bathing and brushing teeth to a full boil for a minimum of one minute, then cool before use.

West Virginia American Water also recommends the following steps:

· Throw away beverages and ice cubes if made with tap water;

· Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;

· Provide pets with boiled water after cooling;

· Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;

· Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.

Update: The Montclair Water Bureau lifted the below Boil Water Advisory on Friday afternoon. “The Water Bureau is pleased to report that the repairs have been completed and subsequent water quality testing shows the water quality to be safe,” town officials stated.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair authorities issued a Boil Water Advisory after a water main break took place on Tuesday at the Siena building at 48 South Park Street. According to a township news release, the Boil Water Advisory includes residents and businesses within the Siena building on both Church and South Park Streets.

The break has caused customers to be without water or to experience a significant loss of pressure, the Montclair Water Bureau stated.

“A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists. As a precaution, we are implementing a Boil Water Advisory until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory,” town officials stated.

Officials recommend that “effective immediately and until further notice,” residents should bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using for:

  • drinking
  • preparing foods, washing vegetables and fruit
  • cooking
  • making ice cubes
  • taking medications
  • brushing teeth
  • mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks

“Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory,” officials advised.

The Montclair Water Bureau also recommended the following measures:

  • Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes if made with tap water during the day of the advisory
  • Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking
  • Do not swallow water while showering or bathing
  • Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle
  • Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from micro-organisms
  • Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries
  • Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled)

Township officials said that the advisory will remain in effect until “repairs are completed and testing shows the water quality to be safe.” Officials plan to notify residents when the boil water advisory is lifted.

Water Main Broken in City of Callender; Boil Advisory Issued

originally posted on June 27, 2016

CALLENDER – A water main was broken in the city of Callender in Webster City on Monday during work to install storm sewers.

The main break left the city without water Monday morning. The city was working to make repairs on the main on Monday, but a boil advisory will be in affect after water service is re-established.

Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, it is being recommended that the water be boiled before being used for drinking or cooking or that an alternative source such as bottled water be used until further notice.

Two sets of water samples will be taken to determine whether the water is safe and when the advisory can be lifted.

Residents of Callender are advised to bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.  The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes.

General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791.
