E. Coli bacteria detected in Greenwood’s water; boil order issued
originally posted on August 13, 2016
GREENWOOD, La. – Water customers in the town of Greenwood are being warned to boil their water before using after tests detected the presence of Fecal Coliform (E.Coli) bacteria.
This is just another chapter in the ongoing problems with Greenwood’s water supply. Boil advisories have been issued multiple times this summer. Customers also have been asked to conserve their usage.
They also are plagued by low water pressure and broken pipes. A new water treatment system is under construction.
E. Coli can make people sick. Particularly concerning are people with weakened immune systems.
Bacterial contamination can occur when increased run-off enters the drinking water source (for example following heavy rains). It can also happen due to a break in the distribution system (pipes) or a failure in the water treatment process.
Possible cross contamination during the collection process.
What should I do? What does this mean?
Do not drink the water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
Fecal Coliforms and E. Coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in the wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children and people with severely compromised immune systems.
The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking this water.
For more information, contact Town of Greenwood at 938-7261 or stop by 9381 Greenwood Rd. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Information is also available by calling Mayor Frank Stawasz at 938-7261.

Leadwood boil water order remains in effect
by Amy Patterson, originally posted on August 12, 2016
Leadwood has been under a boil water order since Thursday, meaning all residents within the city’s water district will need to continue boiling their water until further notice.
“We had a main water break,” said Mayor Dennis Parks, “which is the reason the advisory was put out.”
As soon as city officials learned one of the city’s main lines had ruptured, the water department crew took action to repair it.
“We had a break in the line up on Locust Street,” said Water Operator Kevin Brooks, “and we had to open that hydrant to relieve some of the pressure to work on it. Any time our pressure drops below 20 PSI anywhere within the system you have to issue a boil advisory and that’s the reason for it. The break was repaired; it’s just that we had a little drop in pressure while we were working on it so we had to issue the advisory. It’s just a precaution.”
Parks said the crew also took samples of water that have been sent to Jefferson City for analysis.
“They will not have an answer back until at least Monday,” said Parks, “so that advisory is still in effect at least through Monday; until we get the results of the analysis.”
For questions or concerns, contact Leadwood City Hall by calling 573-562-7125.

Boil water notice issued in Hamilton Twp.
by Jim Hook, originally posted on July 18, 2016
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — The Sandy Hook Water Association has notified its customers to boil water before using it.
A chlorine dispenser malfunctioned on Sunday, according to Neil Shader, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The small private water system serves about 80 people in the area of Gilbert Road near the mountain in northwest Hamilton Township.
The advisory is in effect until the system is flushed, according to the Franklin County Department of Emergency Services.
The dispenser has been fixed, Shader said. The operator will test for bacteria for the next 2 days before lifting the advisory, provided test results are normal again.
A boil water advisory is issued when an event has degraded water quality or has the potential to adversely affect water quality.
You should use tap water that has been boiled and cooled, or bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and food preparation until you are notified that the advisory has been lifted.
Bring all water taken from the tap to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute and cool before using. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
Other precautions to take during the advisory:
- Do not use ice made from recent tap water.
- Do not use tap water to make drinks, juices or fountain soft drinks.
- Do not allow water to contact open wounds. Otherwise, wash your hands and bathe as usual. Bathing is safe as long as no water is swallowed.
- Wash dishes, fruits and vegetables in boiled water or water that has been disinfected with bleach.
- Brush your teeth with boiled water or commercially bottled water.
- Cook with tap water ONLY if the food will be boiled for at least one minute.
- People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
