Water-boiling advisory still in effect for thousands in Northeast Miami-Dade

Water-boiling advisory still in effect for thousands in Northeast Miami-Dade.
A water-boiling advisory for thousands of North Miami-Dade County customers remains in effect at least until Friday afternoon, when officials will decide whether to lift it following a second round of tests.
NMBWater, which serves 170,000 customers in North Miami Beach, Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach and unincorporated Northeast Miami-Dade, plans to update its advisory at 2 pm.
On Wednesday, customers were told to boil their tap water before using it after a minute-long power outage that day at North Miami Beach’s Norwood Water Treatment Plant that may have caused contamination.
“Therefore, as a precaution, we advise that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled prior to usage,” the utility, NMBWater, said in a news release.
The notice comes after “consultation with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County,” according to the release.
For at least 48 hours, customers were told to bring their water to a rolling boil for one minute to remove any possible contaminants.
The “Boil Water Notice” will remain in effect until the utility is given the all-clear from the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade.

Boil Water Advisory issued for Mulvane Mobile Home Park

by Jake Bowles originally posted on April 15, 2016

Possible bacterial contamination leads to a boil water advisory for the Mulvane Mobile Home Park in Sumner County.
It’s just for the Mulvane Mobile Home Park, not the whole city.  The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says broken water lines, lack of well repairs, repeated loss of pressure, and raw sewage on the surface mean the water is unsafe to consume until further notice.
You can boil water for one minute to make it safe to drink or cook with, and it’s OK to shower with normal water.
The KDHE gives the following advice for those affected:
  • Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation, or use bottled water.
  • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
  • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

The advisory took effect April 14 and will remain in effect until the risk of contamination is resolved.

Water Tank Collapse Causes Water Boil Advisory

originally posted on June 21, 2016

LA GRULLA — Officials in La Grulla expect a water boil notice to be over soon.

A water storage tank collapsed and fell on valves. That caused water service to be affected for the city’s residents.

Some La Grulla residents told CHANNEL 5 NEWS they knew it was only a matter of time before the tank would give out.

Crews are now cleaning up the storage tank debris. Water plant supervisor Thor Rivera said, “We had been plugging the holes on the side, and we had been doing some patchwork on it already.”

The city was aware of how rusty the tank was getting. Plant officials were hoping to raise enough money for repairs before the tank collapsed.

“We were putting in the paperwork so we could get a new plant for us,” Rivera said.  The city of La Grulla was told by state officials that they needed a bigger plant.

Crews had to plug the tank up and remove all debris before they could reconnect it to a big tower and resume normal service to La Grulla.

Rivera said he hopes to end the water boil notice soon. He said the water has to be tested before that can happen.

The city is sampling the water to make sure it has no bacteria. They said they should have results within 24 hours from Monday afternoon.

Water main break leads to boil advisory for some Flint residents

by Robert Acosta, originally posted on June 20, 2016

FLINT, MI —  A segment of Flint residents are being advised to boil their water before using it after a pressure drop due to replace broken valves following a water main break along Court Street.

The main break has left a large sinkhole on Court Street, near Downey Street, with crews at the site Monday afternoon to begin repairs that will include valves at the street’s intersection with Pershing, Vosburg, and Durand streets on Tuesday, June 21.

Workers are then expect to perform valve replacements Wednesday at Zimmerman and Vosburg and Corunna and Vosburg.

The current lane closure on Court Street will remain in place for the duration of the work, with traffic delays possible in the affected areas.

People in those areas have been asked to boil their water as a preventive measure as bacterial contamination may have occurred in the water system, according to the city.

“This boil water advisory is just precautionary, and while it may be a hassle, we want residents to be safe,” said Flint Mayor Karen Weaver, in a news release.

Water boiled should come through a filter. The city advised those who may not have a filter to run their water for seven minutes before collecting any water to boil.

Trapped air and loose sediment may also be coming through water lines due to the loss in pressure and may be removed by flushing the water system at homes, but residents should not their system through their filter.

“We know the city’s infrastructure is old and issues like this unfortunately can’t be avoided,” Weaver said. “But we are working to fix the problem.”

TOPEKA, Kan. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the Howison Heights public water supply located in Saline County.

KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure.

The agency says failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

The advisory will remain in effect until the KDHE deems conditions and the risk of contamination adequately resolved.

Rupert Water Boil Advisory Lifted

by Laurie Welch, originally posted on June 20, 2016

RUPERT • A water boil advisory in Rupert was lifted 8 p.m. Sunday.

The order was put in place for the city’s water system on Friday night.

A failure with a well pump motor caused a loss in pressure in the city’s water-distribution system.

James Taylor, head of Rupert’s water department, said Monday the water pressure in the system dropped to 12 pounds per square inche when a pump “kicked out” and a tank in the system spilled water.

Anything below 20 psi and the city has to send a sample to the Department of Environmental Quality to ensure the water supply didn’t become contaminated.

“We took samples to the lab in Pocatello, and it came back all clear,” Taylor said.

When the pressure drops it could indicate that there is a break or leak in the closed system, which could introduce contaminates.

It was a busy weekend, Taylor said, and the city was inundated with calls from residents who had additional questions about the boil order.

“There was five to 15 minutes between calls and they started at 7 in the morning and ended at 11:30 at night,” he said.

Most of the questions hinged on whether it was safe to use un-boiled water to water plants, for animals or for washing clothing.

Taylor said it is safe to use un-boiled water in all those instances, but water to wash dishes should be boiled under a water-boil advisory.
