Water company near Sisters issues boil-water notice

Cate Gillon/Getty Images SISTERS, Ore. – Nearly 600 homes in an unincorporated area north of Sisters are under a boil-water advisory after the area’s water company found E. coli and total coliform bacteria in water samples taken late last week, officials said.
The boil-water notice was sent to Indian Meadow Water Co. customers after monthly routine water samples taken last Thursday and Friday tested positive for E. coli and coliform bacteria the first day, and only for the total coliform the next day, Lynn Lounsbury said in the notice.
The Oregon Health Authority considers any confirmed E. coli positive sample as a public health hazard and violation of drinking water standards requiring notification of customers.
The water company said the contamination, likely from animals, is coming from either its reservoir or one of its three wells.
New samples to be taken Monday will help clarify the contamination source and help determine where and what treatment process is needed.
Water company board member Earl Liverman said if the results come back positive on Tuesday, chlorine would be used to clear the affected well or reservoir, then a repeat test will be performed.
The water company hopes the boil-water notice can be lifted by mid-week or late in the coming week.

Crews work to repair Reading water main break, water restored to most areas

READING, Pa. – Residents and businesses in part of Reading are still dealing with a massive water main break that impacted a thousand customers.
Reading Area Water Authority crews were working well into the night on Friday following an early morning water main break.
Tom Reynolds of the Reading Area Water Authority said "We had to bench the trench due to the depth of the pipe and the safety of our men.
"Currently we have the pipe exposed we are going to cut on each side, what we call a bell."
"Its due to the fact that there’s only one ten inch main running," Reynolds said.
"They do have booster pumps on but they can only kick their pumps on at 40 psi and they are at 20."
The 16- inch water main break will be replaced with a 19-foot piece of pipe.
The pipe "will be joined together with what we call two highmax couplings.
"I came out from work at one, came back home, opened the socket and the water was coming out brown and disgusting, it was terrible," Molina said.
But, he’s glad he can take advantage of the large water tanker mere yards from his home.

ASHCROFT — The community of Ashcroft is now under a boil water advisory, thanks to the storms yesterday.
In a news release, Chief Administrative Officer Michelle Allen says the current water quality is poor because of increased turbidity, caused by the heavy rainfall and mudslides yesterday.

Allen says the advisory is a precautionary measure at this time to ensure the public is protected.
