Line break leads to boil-water advisory for some in Florence

FLORENCE, S.C. –A boil-water advisory was issued Thursday for some water customers along South Cashua Drive.
The city of Florence and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control advise those customers to boil their tap water vigorously for one minute before using it for drinking or cooking.
The advisory was issued after a 12-inch line was broken when a contractor hit it during construction of the South Cashua widening project.
The break occurred about 3:30 p.m. and disrupted service to approximately 1,000 customers.
The city was working to restore water service.
Water customers in this area should vigorously boil their water for at least one (1) full minute prior to drinking or cooking until notified by the city that the advisory is lifted.
Also, any ice made from water that has not been boiled should not be used for drinking purposes.
This boil water advisory is a precautionary measure to protect public health until test results confirm the water is safe to drink.
Test results for bacteriological quality should be completed on Friday, at which time the city will notify residents regarding the status of the boil-water advisory.
People with questions concerning the notice may call the city at 843-665-3236 or SCDHEC at 843-661-4825.

Contaminated water systems in Cenla can lead to crisis similar to Flint

Seven of the 10 most distressed water systems in the state are in Central Louisiana, according to the governor’s Rural Water Infrastructure Committee.
The committee is tasked with helping at-risk water systems to address their issues before they reach a crisis point.
Among the 10 systems on the list are the Hammock Water System in Rapides Parish; the Rogers Community Water System and Town of Tullos Water System in LaSalle Parish; the Clarence Water System and Powhatan Water System in Natchitoches Parish; the Enterprise Water System in Catahoula Parish; and the Town of Clayton Water System in Concordia Parish.
(Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) The list of 10 systems the Rural Water Infrastructure Committee came up with isn’t a list of the worst systems in the state, health officials are quick to point out, or even the ones with the most violations.
"All of our agencies have these resources," Durham said.
What can the committee do to help struggling water systems?
Parish: Rapides Population served: 900 The issues: The system has been cited several times, dating back to 2010, for levels of arsenic above the acceptable standard.
Parish: LaSalle Population served: 495 The issues: Rogers has been under a system wide boil advisory due to holes in its storage tank, which could allow contaminants to get into the water.
Parish: LaSalle Population served: 792 The issues: The system has been under an administrative order for several years for not meeting the Disinfection Byproducts Rule, a federal regulation designed to prevent contaminants from forming in water when it’s treated with chemicals.
The system has been cited for levels of trihalomethanes above the acceptable standard several times since 2014.

Boil order follows water main break on Lake Flower Avenue

SARANAC LAKE — A boil-water order was issued Wednesday for the southeastern corner of this village due to a nasty water main break on Lake Flower Avenue.
Village Department of Public Works Superintendent Jeff Dora announced a boil water order for the following areas: Lake Flower Avenue from Center Street to the village line, Merrill Street, Colony Court, Turtle Pond Road, Crossfield Avenue, Duprey Street, Edward Street, Cortez Lane, Poplar Lane, Tara Drive and Will Rogers Drive.
Under a boil-water advisory, water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute to kill protozoa, bacteria and viruses before it is consumed or used to brush teeth or wash dishes.
“It’s 7 o’clock, and I’m still out on Lake Flower [Avenue].
What does that tell you?” DPW Superintendent Jeff Dora said.
We’re down to the pipe, and hopefully we can make the repair shortly.
“It’s in a bad spot,” he added.
“We’ve already had two previous problems in the same general vicinity.” Sandy soil made the job harder since it kept caving in as crews dug, Dora said.
The break was fixed by midnight, and homes and businesses once again had water access.

Ashland issues water boil advisory

ASHLAND — The Borough of Ashland has issued a water boil advisory until further notice due to a water main break on Wednesday.
On June 13, the Ashland Area Municipal Authority water system experienced a loss of positive water pressure due to a water main break at Centre Street and Hoffman Boulevard.
A loss of positive water pressure is a signal of the existence of conditions that could allow contamination to enter the distribution system.
Do not drink the water without boiling first.
Bring all water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using or use bottled water.
Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice.
These symptoms, however, are not caused only by organisms in drinking water, but also by other factors.
If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.
Affected areas include all customers located in Ashland Borough.

Boil water notice lifted

The notice was downgraded to a water quality advisory as turbidity levels in Okanagan Lake have decreased, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen said.
It took months to plan and organize, but a huge surprise organized by 7-year-old Penticton cancer patient Wills Hodgkinson’s teacher, with the help of his father, went off without a hitch.
"What we did was we told Wills and we let him go into class on Tuesday and he broke the news to the class," said Tim Hodgkinson, Wills’ father.
