Crews work to repair Reading water main break, water restored to most areas

READING, Pa. – Residents and businesses in part of Reading are still dealing with a massive water main break that impacted a thousand customers.
Reading Area Water Authority crews were working well into the night on Friday following an early morning water main break.
Tom Reynolds of the Reading Area Water Authority said "We had to bench the trench due to the depth of the pipe and the safety of our men.
"Currently we have the pipe exposed we are going to cut on each side, what we call a bell."
"Its due to the fact that there’s only one ten inch main running," Reynolds said.
"They do have booster pumps on but they can only kick their pumps on at 40 psi and they are at 20."
The 16- inch water main break will be replaced with a 19-foot piece of pipe.
The pipe "will be joined together with what we call two highmax couplings.
"I came out from work at one, came back home, opened the socket and the water was coming out brown and disgusting, it was terrible," Molina said.
But, he’s glad he can take advantage of the large water tanker mere yards from his home.
