While the Mohawk Valley Water Authority crews repair a large water main break, water service will be interrupted for several hours, the authority said at 4 p.m. Friday.

The break is on a 12-inch transmission main line off Tilden Avenue in New Hartford and is located over 1/4 mile from a road in an area that makes repairs difficult, a news release said.

When water is restored later this evening, a boil water advisory will be in effect. During this time, customers are advised to boil their water for at least two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking. The following areas will be impacted:

– New Hartford: 2-15 Taber Road, Taber Lane, 1790-2949 Tilden Ave., 1711 and higher Sherman Drive, Sherman Lane, Sherman Circle, South Hills Drive, Wadsworth Lane, Wadsworth Lane East, Wadsworth Road, Westwood Lane.

– Frankfort: 1360-2807 Graffenburg Road, Harts Drive, Hayes Road, Salisbury Drive.

The boil water advisory will be in effect for the affected areas for between 24 and 48 hours until lab testing confirms the advisory can be lifted, officials said.

Customers are also advised against using any water that appears cloudy or discolored — especially hot water, since such usage will draw the water into the hot water tank, which may require customers to flush their tank once clear water becomes available.

Customers should also avoid washing their clothes in discolored water, since it may contain sediments that could permanently stain their laundry.
