A boil water advisory remains in effect for the city of Rome.

Mayor Jacqueline Izzo said in an emailed statement Thursday that one sample taken Tuesday and submitted to the Oneida County Health Department contained E. coli.

“All samples taken from Wednesday have been negative showing a good response to our retreatment of the water supply,” Izzo said in the statement. “Following Oneida County and State Health Department protocols, the boil water order must stay in effect for another 24-hour sampling of the water supply.”

Izzo said in the statement that an update on the situation is expected Friday afternoon.

The boil water advisory was issued after a contractor broke a feeder main connecting the water filtration plant to the main line, Izzo said earlier this week. The order will keep customers from drinking untreated water, which may have moved through the water system.

The city consulted with the health department and then issued the order for all customers of Rome’s water system.

The contractor is working to identify the line and restore service while city water department workers are working to restore treated water to the system.
