A leak from mechanical failure on a water main tap led to the city shutting off water on Court Street Wednesday.

City officials turned off water on Court Street about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and placed a 48-hour boil-water warning for residents and businesses located between Fifth and Sixth streets. Water was turned back on at about 2:45 p.m.

Beks restaurant manager Tessa Harder said water was shut off after the restaurant’s lunch rush, and it closed for the afternoon, reopening around 4:15 p.m.

“We’re buying bottled gallons of water,” Harder said earlier Wednesday. “I got the call about the boil order at around 1:15 or 1:30 p.m. Once they shut the water off, they said we needed to be in a boil order for 48 hours.”

Some residents and businesses were not notified water would be shut off or of the 48-hour water boil advisory.

“We were told we were on a boil order, which doesn’t affect our kitchen because everything is either boiled or the temperature for the dish washers were already set,” Brooklyn Pizza owner Karen Atkins said. “We were not told that they were going to shut the water off; all of a sudden, there was no water.”

Atkins said employees and customers weren’t able to use restrooms while water was shut off.
