Southern California’s Westchester-Del Rey tries to end Little League softball drought
SAN BERNARDINO >> It’s been a bit of a drought for Southern California softball teams at the Little League Western Regional Tournament.
For an impartial spectator, you cannot ask for anything more.” The last Southern California and Western Regional champion was the Westchester-Del Rey Little League in 2011, the tournament’s first year in San Bernardino.
“This team does not quit; no way,” said Westchester-Del Rey manager Tim Chrysler, 55, who has coached WDRLL teams for more than 23 years, but is making his first trip to San Bernardino.
Many of the players on this Westchester-Del Rey team also won the 9- and 10-year-old Little League SoCal championship in 2015.
Last year, Westchester-Del Rey got close to returning to the Western Regional, but lost to Burbank in the Southern California State championship game.
“It’s a fairly young team,” he said.
It’s the first time in three years the NorCal champion has not come from the Yuba City area.
Gold Coast advanced to the Western Regional championship game last year, losing to Snow Canyon 6-2.
Play begins at 9 a.m. Friday and runs through the championship game on July 28.
