Stratford water back online
“As long as it holds up, we should be good to go,” Patty Silva, office manager at Stratford Public Utility District, said of the community’s primary well.
Officials first noticed sand in that main well on Aug. 10 and soon realized there was a mechanical problem, so they decided to turn that well off and activated the standby well.
The second well ran fine for one day, but stopped pumping water on the morning of Aug. 11.
Neither well was dry but both had mechanical failures, officials said.
This left the district’s 333 accounts, more than 1,000 people, without drinkable running water.
Well crews began working on the wells right away to try to figure out how to fix the problem as soon as possible.
After some repairs were made to the primary well, it came back online and the water was certified as good to drink on Wednesday, said Kings County Supervisor Joe Neves.
Neves said the only thing that is not status quo in regards to the primary well is the volume of water coming out.
He said the pump volume has been decreased in an effort to reduce the amount of sand that was flowing in the well and allow for a longer use.
After both wells failed, water was trucked in from fire trucks and local dairies before the state approved the use of a third well that was previously abandoned.
